Abstract

Despite the growing attention given to language teacher immunity in the recent years, scant research has focused on how supervisory classroom observation affects teacher immunity through the framework of complexity theory. To address this gap, the current study intended to shed more light on the process of supervisory classroom observation and how it contributes to second language teacher immunity, either productively or maladaptively. To this end, 10 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers were recruited and the data were collected through narrative frames and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicated that the observer’s presence and the entire observation process instigated excessive stress among the teachers and affected the teachers’ self-efficacy, creativity, and motivation; while the post-observation conferences between the teachers and the observers had a positive influence on the immunity development of the teachers. Implications for the stakeholders including the policy makers, institute managers and the observers are provided in the conclusion section of the study.

Abstract

The sugar beet moth, Scrobipalpa ocellatella (Boyd) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most serious threats to sugar beet cultivation worldwide causing economically significant yield loss. The life table parameters of S. ocellatella were determined on eight sugar beet cultivars (Dorothea, Ekbatan, Merak, Palma, Rozier, SBSI 007, Sharif and Shokoofa) under laboratory conditions at 25±1oC, 60±5% RH and 16:8 h (L:D) photoperiod. The longest (15.29 days) and shortest (7.61 days) female longevity was recorded on Shokoofa, and Merak cultivars, respectively. At the same time, Shokoofa and Merak cultivars had the highest and lowest total fecundity (85.26 eggs/female) and (32.39 eggs/female), respectively. The net reproductive rate (R0) varied from 9.31 eggs/individual to 39.44 eggs/individual on eight sugar beet cultivars; the lowest value was on Merak and the highest value was on Shokoofa. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r) (0.102 d-1) and finite rate of increase (λ) (1.107 d-1) were on the Shokoofa cultivar. The results showed that all life table parameters of S. ocellatella were significantly different on the sugar beet cultivars tested. According to the conducted laboratory experiments, Merak was the most resistant cultivar to S. ocellatella compared with the other cultivars tested.

Abstract

Subterranean termites are one of the most important pests of buildings, historic monuments and agricultural crops in some parts of Iran. Using entomopathogenic fungi as microbial insecticides is usually a part of biological control and insect pest management. The pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin (DEMI 001) isolated from Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Oliver) was compared against two subterranean termites, Amitermes vilis (Hagen) and Microcerotermes gabrielis (Weidner) under laboratory conditions. Suspensions of the fungus spores at five concentrations of 101, 102, 103, 104, 106 spores ml-1 were prepared to define LC50 and LT50. To determine LC50 and LT50 of M. anisopliae, bioassays were carried out on worker casts of both termite species. LC50 values for A. vilis and M. gabrielis were 8.5 × 103 and 0.2 × 102 spores ml-1, respectively. LT50 value for M. gabrielis was shorter than that of A. vilis at all five concentrations tested. According to the results of the bioassay, M. anisopliae was more effective for controlling M. gabrielis than that for A. vilis.

Abstract

Rubber to metal adhesion in rubber to metal parts is of great importance. The optimum performance of this type of adhesion depends on the adhesion strength between rubber compound and metal surface and the consolidation of the compound. Resin additives and the presence of silica particles play a different role in adhesion improvement. Peel90 tensile strength and adhesion tests have been used to evaluate the effect of additives. According to the results, the presence of 15 phr of phenol formaldehyde resin has been coused to increase rubber to metal adhesion up to 17% but a reduction of 43% in the tensile strength of compound. On the other hand, it was observed that the presence of 15 phr HMMM resin along with phenol formaldehyde resin not only could improve rubber to metal adhesion up to 137%, but also decreased the loss of tensile strength of the rubber mixture to 12%. This is while the addition of 5 phr aerosol along with these resins could increase the adhesion to 175%. In this state, tensile properties have only drop out 3%.

Abstract

The potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) is one of the important pests of potato in tropical regions. In this research, the toxicity of two insecticides, abamectin and deltamethrin on P. operculella was studied at 26 ± 1 C°, 65 ± 5% RH and photoperiod of 16:8 h (L: D). The concentrations were determined by preliminary dose setting experiments. Distilled water was used as control. LC50 values for egg, first instar larvae and adult stages in abamectin were 0.92, 0.014 and 0.46 mg ai/l and in deltamethrin were 0.09, 0.024 and 0.29 mg ai/l, respectively. The sublethal effects of abamectin and deltamethrin on population growth parameters of P. operculella were determined at mentioned conditions. Four hundred 1 day old eggs of the pest were dipped in insecticides solutions (LC30). After egg hatching, the first instar larvae were transferred on potato tubers and placed in transparent plastic dishes. After adults' emergence, 20 females were used for each treatment in life table experiments. In control, abamectin and deltamethrin treatments intrinsic rates of increase were estimated to be 0.060, 0.042 and 0.141 day-1, respectively. Statistical analyses showed that deltamethrin had the higher toxicity to egg and adult stages of PTM and abamectin had the higher toxicity to its first instar larvae. Since deltamethrin increased the stable population parameters of P. operculella specially its intrinsic rate of increase, thus it might not be recommended for control of PTM. However based on lethal and sublethal effects, abamectin could be suitable for management of this pest.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate commercial formulations of insecticides against western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande).The insects were collected from commercial greenhouses of cucumber in Varamin, Iran. The tested insecticides were diazinon (EC 60%), cypermethrin (EC 40%), fipronil (EC 2.5%), imidacloprid (SC 35%) and a botanical insecticide oxymatrine (Kingbo, AS 0.6%). Fipronil had the highest efficacy among all tested insecticides (LC50 = 17.97 ppm). However, imidacloprid had the lowest efficacy (LC50 = 2303 ppm). The oxymatrine was effective (LC50 = 69.94 ppm) after fipronil.

Abstract

One of the most important aspects of presence of citizens in urban spaces, that enhances their vitality and their effective social roles, is “moving on foot”. Nowadays, in many urban spaces, motion of a large number of citizens, who like to walk here and there in the cities, is affected by various factors. Dissatisfaction of pedestrians due to the limitation of urban spaces has a relationship with the violation of their rights. Citizenship rights, is one of the issues to be considered in Islam and is highly encouraged in respecting human values. A citizen, is an official member of a city, state or country and because of that, there are rights and responsibilities for him/her that have been assigned in law. In fact, citizenship right is a combination of duties and responsibilities of citizens in relation to each other, to the local and to the national government. In Islam, the rights and responsibilities that are known as the citizens’ rights are indigenous with the laws and regulations that have been known and assigned as Islamic human rights. These rights that must be strongly respected by Muslims, include civil, human, social, political, cultural and judicial rights. By studying some samples of justice in the Holy Qur’an, one can notice that “justice” involves all the issues which related to human beings. Some of the meanings of justice in Qur›an which have connection with citizenship rights in Muslim community include: placing everything in their right places, proper and accurate application of everything, respect for individual rights and the prevention of injury and trespassing, saving and prevention extremes, equality with other people and prevention and prohibition of superiority. Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) also mentioned justice as a factor for protecting and defending human beings’ right. He emphasized justice as the main criterion for all individual, social, moral, material, physical, spiritual, political and non-political rights. In this article, citizenship right is discussed from the perspective of justice in Islam. Justice is an important factor in the formation of the Islamic city. City is a complex structure that in every moment is influenced by three factors, «body or the built form», «population» and «social relations». So, establishment of justice in Islamic city is the function of (1) establishment of justice in the physical framework of a city, (2)fairly citizens use of urban facilities, (3) establishment of justice regarding to the citizens’ cultural aspects and issues (4) establishment of justice in the behavior of citizens with the physical framework of the city. The balance of the city framework, justice in the rational provision and distribution of municipal facilities, with access to the city authorities, fighting against oppression, good placement of urban facilities and their proximity and accessibility are all the signs of justice in urban scale. But in small-scale there are principles that following them, shows the importance of respecting pedestrians› rights and social justice, such as respect for human worth and dignity, good proportionality between dimensions of space and the characteristics of mental and physical organism of the human body, making the relationship between nature and human, and respect for other people, “La zarar va La zerar rule in Islam”, individual privacy, creating visual beauty and many other issue of these kinds. This study sought to evaluate the impact of these factors in violation of the rights of pedestrians, in the study area (intersection of Jalal Ale Ahmad and Chamran Highway to Kargar-e-shomali Street and Fatemi Intersection) as one of the areas with high pedestrian traffic. The statistical population of this study are the pedestrians who use these paths (the study area) at different times of the day and night. Research methodology is analytical-explanatory and based on field study. So on the basis of pedestrians and authorities views that was found through the researchand the principles of justice in Islam in relation to citizenship rights, six sets of criteria for the analysis citizenship rights of pedestrianscan be defined: Continuity, short distances, beauty, security, safety and comfort.A hierarchical model which intends to determine and analyze the factors that affect the rights of pedestrians in the study area has been used as well as “Expert Choice” software to evaluate the model. The results were obtained for the measures, on the basis of priority including security, safety, short distances, comfort, continuity and beauty. This means that in the study area, security had the greater role on the rights of pedestrians, and beauty has the least importance than others. On the basis of the principles of justice in Islam in relation to rights of citizens and with the issues which obtained in technical studies and expert opinions, the criteria which can affect pedestrian rights were found. For analysis of data, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique, and for the importance of options, a questionnaire have been used. “Delphi Method” was also used to evaluate the importance of the criteria and sub criteria. AHP, according to its special features in the issues related to urban planning is a useful and desirable application. It is useful because it prepared a context for analysis and conversion of complex issues to a logical and simple hierarchy, thus planners can evaluate options with criteria and sub criteria. In addition, it also helps in analyzing the compatibility review in judgments. Given that most issues in urban planning and design can be studied through qualitative and quantitative indicators, the possibility of simultaneous use of both qualitative and quantitative criteria in AHP method made it a powerful tool for analyzing urban issues. Flexibility, ease of calculation and the possibility of final rankings also are other advantages of AHP method which can help in the investigation of Issues in urban planning. So, citizenship rights as a manifestation of the principle of justice in the Muslim community should be considered in Islamic cities. The results of the research show that urban management is the most important factor in relation with violation and defense of pedestrians’ rights. Other factors are: the way people behave in adjacent spaces, the behavior of the owners of vehicles and the behavior of other users at the urban spaces. Security is also the most important factor for pedestrians, the lack of it, is a type of violation of their rights. The current problematic situation of pedestrians’ rights is the result of years’ lack of planning and implementing the rights of individuals to neglect issues of implementation of the management system, but the planners and designers can enhance the present situation through a integrated comprehensive and coordinated planning. This program should be associated with all aspects of planning, design and management of the system. Thus, the crucial role of urban management in connection with the rights of pedestrians in designing new cities, in regularization of towns, in allocating of funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of urban road networks and the regulation of urban laws (like appropriate legislation and ordinances to bring about the changes in the culture of citizens who are either walking or riding in urban spaces), as the main tools for managing short and average trips within the city, and the most appropriate manner, must have the highest priority.

Abstract

Folk Culture represents behavior, customs and traditions of people based on their material and spiritual needs. It reflects the context of people's life and their interaction with the natural environment. Vernacular architecture is formed by local people based on their interaction with the environment, their customs and local techniques. This research aims to find mutual relationships between vernacular rural architecture and oral literature or folklore of one of the varied ethnic cultures of Iran, the Azerbaijan region. Initially, more than 2500 verses, proverbs, puzzles, etc. in Azeri language were studied and those ones which have described and visualized the features of local rural vernacular architecture were analysed. Later, after field surveys of a number of stepped villages, the reflection of characteristics of the village such as villages' tissue, natural environment, common spaces, houses and details and structures, on the visualization of the verses is presented. As a conclusion, it seems that the spaces and details of houses as the heart of life has the most abundance in verses. The results of this research have represented the strong bonds between each space of the village, the flow of life and the folk culture linked to it that is visualized in oral literature. Therefore a comprehensive approach toward the folk culture can conserve the mutual relationships between people, their traditions, and their vernacular built environment. This research has a qualitative method based on the library study of Azeri folklore and field survey of stepped villages in Azerbaijan.

Abstract

Abstract In recent years many researches have been focused on active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems. AMB offers advantages such as, contact less and friction free operation, excellent performance over a wide range of temperature, no need for lubricant and longer life. Technology of magnetic bearings can be considered as a new field of research in Iran. This paper presents design, manufacturing and control of a magnetically levitation system with successful operation. This research concluded with documentation of the AMB technology which is prerequisite for earning the technology of active magnetic systems (AMS) and paves the way to develop it.

Abstract

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important pests of field crops, orchard trees and ornamentals around the world. The short life cycle, high reproductive potential, accompanied by frequent acaricide applications have caused resistance development to wide range of acaricides. In this study the susceptibility of two populations, collected from Karaj and Mahllat, was investigated against fenpyroximate. The bioassay test was carried out by using the leaf-dip method. The results showed that the LC50 values for Karaj and Mahallat population were 2.1 and 92 (mg/ml), respectively. The resistance ratio was 43.8. The enzyme assay results revealed that the activity ratios of esterase in Mahallat to Karaj populations were 2.5 and 1.2 when α-NA and β-NA were used as a substrate, respectively. The activity of cytochrome P450 in Mahallat population was 1.37 times higher than the Karaj population. There was no significant difference in glutathion S-transferase activity between the two populations. The gene expression (qRT-PCR) results showed that the expression level of CYP392A11 in Mahallat population was 3.52 times higher than Karaj population. These results suggested that esterase and cytochrome P450 monoxygenase are probably involved in resistance of T. urticae to fenpyroximate.

Abstract

Tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a serious pest of the greenhouse in Iran. Chemical control is the main method in high infestation conditions to deal with this pest. In this study, the efficacy of five insecticides from different groups consisting of abamectin, spinosad, imidacloprid, indoxacarb and cypermethrin was examined on the egg, larvae and adult stages of T. absoluta in laboratory conditions. The LC50 values of the insecticides were estimated at the larval stage. The results showed that abamectin had the most and imidacloprid had the least ovicidal effect. None of the tested insecticides had a satisfactory effect on the adult stage. The maximum adulticide impact was 40% for spinosad. Abamectin with 0.45 mg ai.l-1 of LC50 value had the most toxicity and imidacloprid with 980 mg ai.l-1 of LC50 value had the least toxicity on the third instar larvae. According to the findings, abamectin and spinosad had the highest toxicity against three developmental stages (egg, larvae and adults) of the pest and can be used in infested tomato fields, when all life stages of T. absoluta are present at the same time. Meanwhile, it is recommended to use selective insecticides such as indoxacarb, when natural enemies are very active or the population of the tomato leaf miner is mostly at the larval stage.

Abstract

Background: The use of plant extracts or their compounds as antimicrobial agents for oral infections worldwide represents that herbal medicines could be used as an effective alternative method in oral health care. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal and antibacterial effects of five traditional medicinal plant extracts on standard and clinical strains of bacteria and fungi causing dental caries.
Materials & Methods: Aqueous and methanolic extracts of Zataria multiflora, Lawsonia alba, Zizyphus spina-christi, Myrtus communis, and Citrus aurantium were prepared using maceration method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) of the prepared extracts were evaluated against bacterial (Streptococcus sanguinis and S. mutans) and fungal (Candida albicans, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis) isolates using broth microdilution method.  
Findings: Aqueous extracts of the studied plants showed no antimicrobial effects on the studied microorganisms, except M. communis and C. aurantium. The results indicated the antimicrobial potency of the methanolic extract of M. communis (MIC range =2 to 64 µg/mL) against all the studied microorganisms, followed by Z. multiflora (MIC range = 512-2048 µg/mL), L. alba (MIC range = 1024-2048 µg/mL), C. aurantium (MIC range = 1024-4096 µg/mL), and Z. spina-christi (MIC range=2048- ˃4096 μg/mL).  Also, the lowest MMCs against the studied strains were related to the methanolic extract of M. communis (MMC range = 16-512 µg/mL).
Conclusion: The results showed remarkable antimicrobial effects of M. communis extract, which could be a suitable alternative to chemical mouthwashes to prevent and control oral infections.

Abstract

 
The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most damaging tomato pests in the world and in Iran. The toxicity of acetamiprid, eforia (thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin) and hexaflumuron alone and in mixture with emamectin benzoate was studied against 4th-instars of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) at 25 ± 2 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and 16:8 (L:D) h. Moreover, the mixtures of examined insecticides with emamectin benzoate at LC15:LC15 ratio were assessed on the general esterase enzyme activity and total protein content of 4th-instars. The highest toxicity was found for emamectin benzoate after 72 h (LC50 = 0.48 mg a.i./l), followed by acetamiprid (LC50 = 46.94 mg a.i./l), eforia (LC50 = 156.24 mg a.i/l) and hexaflumuron (LC50 = 670.32 mg a.i/l). Mixing emamectin benzoate with acetamiprid at the ratio of LC50:LC50 and LC25:LC25 resulted in synergistic impacts while mix of two other ratios of the same pesticides represented additive influences. The mixture of emamectin benzoate with either hexaflumuron or eforia at all ratios created antagonistic and additive effects, respectively. Mixing emamectin benzoate with either acetamiprid or eforia increased larval esterase activity, however, there was no significant difference between emamectin benzoate in mixture with hexaflumuron and using it alone. Mixing emamectin benzoate with the examined insecticides considerably decreased the larval total protein content. Based on the findings of this work, the mixtures of eforia and acetamiprid with emamectin benzoate represented greater negative effects against 4th-instars compared to emamectin benzoate alone and the control.

Abstract

An Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system is designed and manufactured, in which a controlled current is applied to the electromagnets of the stator by a PID controller and the generated attraction forces control the gap between rotor and stator. Effect of parameters, such as sampling frequency, excitation pattern, and the gap between rotor and stator on stability of AMB is statistically analyzed, using the experimental results. Furthermore, dynamic behavior of the system, effect of magnetic field and the resultant force, are numerically analyzed. As the system is nonlinear, experimental results are used to study the effects of nonlinearity and to control the system. In numerical analysis, the distribution and flux density of the magnetic field and the applied force on Iron shaft are calculated by Virtual Work and Maxwell Methods. In statistical analysis, the effect of frequency and gap between rotor and stator are used to determine the stable working point of the system.

Abstract

The design of the structural supports has always been practically important in engineering applications. In addition to holding a structure properly, supports can also be utilized to improve the structural performances. In this study, by using modified finite element method (MFEM) and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA), the maximum of bending moment was minimized. In this paper both elastic and rigid supports are taken into account. As compared to other design optimization methods, ICA is robust, more efficient, and requiring fewer number of function evaluations, while leading to better quality of results. Appling the modified finite element method not only reduces computational cost and increases convergence rate, but also reach the global optimum position of supports. Three classical examples are given to demonstrate the validity and capability of the proposed optimization procedure for finding the global support positions. Results show that support position optimization by using present method, can reduce the maximal moment significantly, and deserves more investigation.

Abstract

In this research, the effects of cutting parameters on material removal rate and surface roughness, are investigated. Therefore, after that the comprehensive model of low-immersion milling is developed, the optimum cutting conditions has to be found for optimizing all of them. The stability criterion is considered as the optimization constraint which is calculated by TFEA. On the other hand, instead of using explicit equation for calculating surface roughness, such as previous works, surface roughness is calculated by TFEA for all of the cases that are needed. Finally, the ability of Genetic algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm for searching optimum cutting parameters are compared and the results are reported. By comparing the results of the three algorithms it is shown that the ICA is more powerful to deal with nonlinearity aspects of the problem and to tackle sticking in local minimums. Also it is demonstrated that the convergence rate of the ICA is faster than the other two methods. Finally, experiments to confirm the changes of the objective function toward optimal point are done and error percentage of objective function at obtained optimal point compared with experimental result is determined.

Abstract

Objective: Menstrual blood stromal stem cells (MBSCs) share some phenotypic and functional similarities with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are shown to inhibit either the function or generation of different immune cells, including dendritic cells (DCs). However, data regarding MBSCs’ potential effects on immune system cells are elusive. Here, we examine whether MBSCs affect the generation of human monocyte-derived DCs. Methods: Menstrual blood samples were collected from apparently healthy women on the second day of their menstrual cycles. The adherent portions were subcultured to omit unwanted cells and obtain MBSCs. Magnetically-isolated peripheral blood monocytes were differentiated towards DCs through treatment with recombinant granulocyte monocyte colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin 4 (IL-4) in the presence or absence of MBSCs. After five days, monocyte-derived DCs were analyzed for the expression of surface markers by flow cytometry. IL-6 level was determined in the co-culture supernatants. Results: Co-culture with MBSCs significantly down regulated the expression of DC marker (CD1a) and up regulated the expression of monocyte marker (CD14) on monocyte-derived DCs compared with the control group. IL-6 level was shown to be significantly higher in the supernatant of the monocyte-MBSC co-culture. Conclusion: Collectively, this is the first study to show the inhibitory impacts of MBSCs on the generation of DCs. IL-6 could be viewd as a potential factor mediating this effect. Regarding the known advantages over MSCs, MBSCs could be considered as a promising future candidate for immunomodulatory purposes in the clinical setting.

Abstract

In recent years many investigations have been performed on design and fabrication of micro mechanical manipulators. These manipulators have a wide application in industry specifically medical applications. A practical usage of this manipulator is endoscopy system. In the endoscopy system, we need a small manipulator with high maneuverability and flexible body to make the probe’s movement into a colon easier than classic manipulators. In this paper a basic flexible module is developed for use in this structure. Connecting three wires of shape memory alloy uniformly distributed in circumference of a compressive spring with angle of 120 degrees, it is possible to make an almost large displacement in the end planes with small strain of wires. In this paper, a model is developed to define the spring deformation which in the following is coupled with the model of SMA wire presented by Brinson to describe the module behavior definitely. Dynamic modeling and simulation is implemented in MATLAB-Simulink and module performance in addition to proper geometry for the considered application is extracted. Through the results of simulation verified by experiment, proper parameters of module for providing more deflection and rotation when activated by SMA are extracted.
