The degree of uniformity of refrigerant distribution in evaporator coil circuits, which is accomplished by the refrigerant distributor at the evaporator inlet, plays an important role in improving the efficiency of refrigeration systems. In this study, in order to investigate the effect of distributor geometric parameters on distribution uniformity, numerical simulation of R22 refrigerant flow at an evaporation temperature of -18 degrees Celsius was carried out using ANSYS Fluent and the finite volume method. Assuming isothermal flow inside the distributor, the effects of dispersed two-phase flow, phase change, pressure fluctuations in the outlet branches, and the wall roughness of the distribution chamber on distribution performance were examined. In addition, the applicability of an atomizing nozzle, combining the effect of two-phase flow dispersion with the choking phenomenon in converging-diverging nozzles, was studied. The results of the numerical comparison show that the deviation of mass flow rate from the average value at the outlets is 0.045 for the critical distributor and 0.521 for the Venturi type. Within the range investigated in this study, increasing wall roughness in the distribution chamber, although it reduces the velocity at the throat of the critical distributor nozzles, improves the uniformity of flow distribution. The results also indicate that, for a constant nozzle diameter, increasing the inlet mass flow rate, and for a constant flow rate, decreasing the nozzle diameter, lead to improved distribution uniformity in the outlet branches. It was also shown that the results of this study can be generalized to pure refrigerants as well.
