Abstract
In this study, to incorporate the laser function into the zirconia sintering process, the numerical modeling of laser irradiation employing a sinusoidal modulation function was simulated using a non-Fourier, dual-phase-lag model. The defined laser function ensures the irradiation heat flux remains within the range of 2 kW/cm², while the intensity is delivered in a pulsed manner, allowing for thermal relaxation intervals within the dental veneer. The laser beam exhibits a Gaussian spatial distribution with a beam radius of 2 mm. The equations were solved using the finite difference approximation method in MATLAB. To analyze the sintering process of a zirconia dental coping, a geometry based on actual dimensions was examined. A coordinate mapping technique was employed to generate a mesh for the geometry, accounting for all its complexities. Simulation results indicated that during the sintering process using a sinusoidal laser function, the temperature rises from ambient levels to 1600°C over approximately 140 minutes, followed by rapid cooling of the coping at an exponential rate. While rapid laser sintering is an attractive option due to the ability to raise temperatures quickly and reduce total processing time, it may induce steep temperature gradients. The significance of raising the temperature over a very short period approximately 3 hours, compared to the 10 hours required for standard processes lies in the reduction of production time and the increase in productivity.
